SPEED CONTROL OF DC SERIES MOTORS

Speed control of a dc series motors may be accomplished through:-
ARMATURE CONTROL METHOD
FIELD CONTROL METHOD
SERIES -PARALLEL CONTROL

1. ARMATURE SPEED CONTROL METHOD:-
Speed adjustment of dc series motor by armature control may be had by any one of the following three methods:-
i. Armature resistance control method
ii. Shunted armature control method
iii. Armature terminal voltage control method

i. Armature resistance control method:-
This is the most common method employed. It is obtained in the same way as for a dc shunt motors with the exception that the control resistance connected directly in series with the supply to the complete motor,as shown in fig.

ii. Shunted armature control method:-
The combination of a rheostat shunting the armature and a rheostat in series with the armature, as shown in fig.
It is used to give slow speeds at light loads. Such the speed control by lowering the voltage applied to the motor armature and by varying the flux.

iii. Armature terminal voltage control method:-
The speed control of dc series motors can be accomplished by supplying the power to the motor from a separate variable- voltage supply. This method is seldom used because of high cost of control equipment.

2. FIELD CONTROL MEHOD:-
The speed of a dc series motor can be controlled by varying the flux in any one of the following manners:
i. Field Divertor method:-

ii. Tapped Field Method:-

iii. Paralleling Field Coil Method:-

3. SERIES- PARALLEL CONTROL METHOD:-

When two or more similar series motors are employed in pairs, as in electric traction, speed control can be obtained by combining series resistance with series and parallel connections, as shown in fig.
